Greetings!

I'd like to share how my Recycle Art Make-and-Take event went!  I had the opportunity to join forces with the Columbus Idea Foundry and provide my free Make-and-Take stations at Columbus' FIRST Mini Maker Faire, which was held at COSI (a hands-on, interactive science center for kids) Saturday, September 29th.  We had a wonderful turnout for this event, and had more than 100 individuals participate in a hands-on activity!

I collected a plethora of recycled material:  from my own household and from individuals in Columbus, largely through FreeCycle and Generation Green.  FreeCycle is a moderated Yahoo group which connects folks who have stuff they no longer need/want to people who can use it, thereby preventing usable material from ending up in the landfill.  I also scored a significant amount of reclaimed ceramic tile from the good folks at Generation Green, a Dublin-based retail shop which offers eco-friendly products, many of which are handmade.

We had make-and-take stations where kids (and adults!) could make felt-backed coasters from reclaimed ceramic tiles, onto which they could decoupage decorative paper or their own drawn design; organizers made from spray sealed baby formula canisters and covered in recycled wallpaper samples; treat jars made from recycled glass jars covered with wallpaper samples or recycled paper; mixed-media postcards made from out-of-date postcards and fabric wallpaper sample cards; wallpaper sample mosaics, and more.

We also showcased a variety of finished ideas and provided free project idea sheets with instructions to get folks started at home.  I covered some paper supply company sample booklets with recycled wallpaper samples for pretty sketchbooks, turned a cereal box into a hanging file folder, painted a grecian-inspired design on a reclaimed ceramic tile for an antiquated-looking art piece, turned some tin cans into an "Angry Bird" toss game, transformed cardboard from food packaging and recycled paper into journals, wallpaper samples and cardboard into folders, cut and melted circles from plastic water bottles into interesting shapes, enameled them with transparent stained glass paint and embellished with charms for Chihuly-inspired pendants, upcycled rejected vases into home-friendly decor pieces, and more!

It was a wonderful experience to engage individuals, and especially teachers and childcare directors in fun, easy, and affordable recycle arts and crafts.  The examples seemed to get people excited about the possibilities, and kids and parents had a blast diving into all the great art supplies and engaging with the material hands-on!

Many thanks to DeviantART for providing the Creative Grant so we could get in on this venue, through which we reached many more people than I expected!  What a great way to support artistic communities!

Thanks for all the encouragement folks! I'm pleased to say the event was successful! I created a journal entry about how it went, and I have tons of photos, I'm just not sure how to upload a photo album that isn't submitted "art".. any ideas?
